Robert Nakata

Dr. Bob Nakata is a 35-year veteran of Silicon Valley startups and public companies in the technology industry and is a co-founder of Nuveia LLC. He is a subject matter expert on IOT sensors, radar remote sensing, direction finding and geolocation algorithms. Dr. Nakata developed a patented wearable sensor using a  hybrid RF and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) positioning system that uses sensor fusion to obtain precise position estimates. He also developed a patent pending drone radar platform for search and rescue operations to detect victims that are buried alive.

Dr. Nakata was formerly the CEO and CTO of Kai Medical (FDA cleared noncontact vital signs monitors), Vice President of Engineering at Verifone (secure electronic payment systems), Vice President of Worldwide Engineering at Interwave Communications (portable cellular base stations) and Senior Vice President of Operations and Engineering at GWCom (wireless internet). At GWCom, he oversaw the engineering, manufacturing, deployment and operation of the wireless data networks and mobile devices. His claim to fame is meeting Steve Jobs and giving him the “iphone 0.” He has traveled extensively to Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea to establish strategic and manufacturing partnerships and to manage engineering teams.

Dr. Nakata is an entrepreneur that teaches innovation and entrepreneurship classes, including the Design Thinking methodology and is certified to teach the Lean Launchpad curriculum (Lean Startups). He is also a Visiting Professor at Ritsumeikan University where he teaches IoT Innovation and Smart Transportation courses. Dr. Nakata holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, an MBA from The Wharton Business School, Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, both from MIT.
